Lanzarote: Our Paradise

Looking back now, I have to say that choosing Lanzarote as one of my first sun holiday destinations was an excellent decision. We started planning our summer holiday in 2007 and we were thinking about visiting the Canary Islands. My colleague, Liam, had been travelling there for years so we knew who to go to for some advice!  Liam knew us quite well and recommended visiting Lanzarote.

We booked our two week stay in the Puerto Del Carmen resort, staying in Lomo Blanco Apartments on a self-catering basis. Before travelling we had done some research on places to see and general information about the island. We planned out our trip quite well, so on arrival we knew which places we were going to visit.

We travelled to Lanzarote in September. The flight was just over 4 hours and the airport transfer took less than half an hour. The weather was fantastic; sunny and warm. There is always a nice breeze on the island, so it’s never too hot. Evenings in September are still very warm. If you are planning a family holiday the best time to visit is April, May, September and October as it’s not too hot and the sea water temperature is quite high. The resorts of Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca are recommended for a family and friendly experience with waterparks and hotels with attractions for younger visitors.

Car rental in Lanzarote is great value for money. We decided to rent the car for our two week stay so we could explore the whole island. We visited the main tourist attractions: James del Agua, Cueva de Los Verdes, Timanfaya National Park, Jardin de Cactus, Mirador del Rio.We found all attractions very interesting and fabulous. I’m sure even a very fussy tourist would find something on the island that would meet their expectations. We also visited other beach resorts like Playa Blanca, Costa Teguise, Famara. The great thing about the island is that every beach is so different; from dark volcanic sands in Puerto Del Carmen to lovely white beaches in Playa Blanca and north of the island near the small town of Orzola. We also took the opportunity to visit the island of Fuerteventura and booked the glass bottom boat trip from Puerto Del Carmen. It was a lovely day out; with the opportunity to explore another Canary Island!

After couple of days we were already in love with this magnificent island. We knew that we would definitely be returning to Lanzarote very soon. Our holidays are always quite active. In the evening we were exploring our resort of Puerto del Carmen; which is divided into two parts, Old Town and the New Town.If you like lively bars, restaurants, shopping and lovely sea views the famous strip Avenida de las Playas in the New Town is the choice for you.

You need to experience it yourself as no words can describe the atmosphere and feel of this amazing place.

If you prefer quieter surroundings and a romantic evening walk with beautiful sunsets; I recommend visiting the Harbour in the Old Town. It offers excellent fish restaurants with incredible views of the sea and surrounding volcanic mountains.

Our holiday was nearly coming to an end and we already missed the island. After coming back to Ireland, we told our family about this amazing holiday and decided to book our next visit for the following year and meet up over there with our family and friends.

We have now visited the island 8 times (with our next visit booked and highly anticipated!) and our holiday is always unbelievable experience.

During our first visit we had seen most of the attractions on the island; but our mission is to explore and experience something new during every visit.  With so much diversity, we know the island has so much more to offer for our future visits.

Lanzarote has become the place where we meet with our family and friends, as we have been living away from home since 2005. It’s fantastic to know that there is another place on the earth were you can enjoy time together with your family and have a fabulous sun holiday in the most relaxing place you could ever imagine.

We are already counting down the days until our trip in July and meeting with our family there.
